These days our life is influenced a lot by social media posts. They disseminate a lot of knowledge, but also sometimes some of their claims are false. It is important to validate the source of the post, and believe.
I think everyone would have seen the post on WhatsApp that “imported oil being tampered with Mineral oil.” As an insider in the cooking oil industry, I would like to elaborate on the process of importing cooking oil.
When a contract is made to import cooking oil from another country, a surveyor is appointed by the exporting country to check the quality and the quantity of the oil being boarded onto the ship. Once this is verified, the ship is set to sail.
FROM WHERE DO WE GET COOKING OILS?
Once the ship reaches our domestic port, officials from the Food Safety department board the ship and take samples from various tanks which are set to discharge. The quality of the oil is checked in their laboratories, to see whether the oil is within the parameters of the Indian standards. If the quality is “ok”, then the Food Safety gives the go-ahead to discharge the oil.
Now the domestic surveyors come into the picture and they check the quality and quantity of the oil. And when they are satisfied, the oil is discharged for human consumption.
Because there are several checks and balances in place, you can be assured that the cooking oil reaching your home bought from a reputed brand will certainly be up to the standards, and will definitely not have mineral oil adulteration.
